This grocery store is a gem hidden in West Hartford! Their prepared food is overall excellent! Last time I went, I had the Crown Poke Bowl from the sushi bar and it was spectacular. Can’t wait to go back again. Recommend 100%
I love Crown Supermarket. As West Hartford continues to evolve, the number of longstanding establishments wanes. “For better or worse” is a topic for another day, and as someone who’s been a resident for more than a few decades, I have strong opinions on that. Through all its trials and tribulations, Crown Market remains steadfast and constant, and an incredible resource for the community stretching beyond the stock on its shelves. All of Crown’s offerings are top notch, with the tuna salad naturally taking the spotlight for me. This comes with a catch, and why I’ve rated Crown as 3 of 5 stars (had I been able to give it a 3.5, I would have). It all comes down to that dang-good tuna salad.
What will drive folks like me away from Crown could be the tuna salad—what enticed me in the first place some years ago. The price point at time of writing for the tuna salad is $15/lb. Over the past decade, the tuna quality has waned a bit. Perhaps this is due in part to different hands preparing the same recipe—all the ingredients are there, always, but at times the mayonnaise overpowers the fish and at times the fish overpowers the mayo. Minor changes, of course, but when that’s coupled with the leap in the price point, I have to wonder if this will ultimately hinder more than help. I’ve already found other tuna salads in the area that are comparable (those options pale in comparison my own homemade version of the same). So now I wonder if it’s time I, too, move on because $15/lb is enough to entice me to consider my options in earnest. It sounds so silly, but is Crown really worth my weekly visit? My heart wants to say yes. But as I look back on the countless times I’ve waited for a sales attendant to man the one register in operation in this era of self-checkout, I not sure anymore.
Like the mayo and the tuna in the salad, there is a balance in all things—and yet I see the scale tipping.
The absolute best! Needed sandwiches quickly due to passing of family member. Ready in less than an hour. Would recommend to all even those not Jewish like us.
On Thursday afternoon February 8th around the 3 o'clock hour I entered the store to get what I needed for the Shabbat.
On the way in a store employee directs me into the store. I noticed 3 people just passed him talking or arguing???
While shopping I ran into a store employee that I've known from before showing me items and new items too that would have cause me to give the Crown Market 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ BTW her name is Karen, same one who waited on me going through the check out, until...
...While I'm going through the check out I noticed that the West Hartford police was there standing next to the office was the owner of the Crown and a woman was there too taking amongst themselves.
I can't help that the owner of the Crown market called the police on me.
If so, what did I do to you.
(Who called the police, what is the nature of your complaint , what is your evidence?).
As a healer this was most injurious (anytime the police are calling on me or otherwise just happen to be there or show up.)
This isn't about me it's about everybody as I don't like it being done to someone else either I'm very big a how one treats another.
I'm a healer who is a empath, a empath who is a healer, I'm known by some as Lucio the healer
This was a non contact incident as I was not stoped by the officer and or store personnel when I was leaving the store.
Shorty after I left the store I passed by it on 62 bus heading back to downtown Hartford and the police car was gone.
It's entirely possible that the store has a problem with my attire.
I wear black leather biker jacket and black leather pants and black sunglasses and my vinyl biker jacket and pants which is black smooth and shiny and many miss treat me as a result this is prejudice and profiling .
I am that I am a Jew who wears leather.
From Lucio the healer 🚨❤️🩹
Love what the new owners have done!
Love the new Cafe area!
Two things that could be better:
1. There needs to be many more handicap accessible parking!
I work with elderly Jewish people in Bishop's Corner. The parking lot is quite difficult due to the hill right in front of the entrance. It's not easy pushing a person in a wheelchair. I sincerely
hope you can add more handicap accessible parking.
2. What is going on with EBT/SNAP?
Many Crown customers, particularly those living on Starkel Road are low income and have relied on EBT/SNAP when shopping at the Crown. It would be a shame to not offer this any longer.
This is a wonderful place for Jewish ethnic flavors and delicacies. Try their soups, bakery, and especially the deli department. Everything is of high quality. The tuna salad is a highlight. Knishes and fresh kugel pudding are available. What you could get easily in New York City is harder to find up here. This market is the exception.
Quality of deli: 5 stars
Confusing Passover experience: 1 star
BOTTOM LINE: visit for the deli
We visited this grocery on Passover, after tasting some of their very delicious catering/deli at a conference in Hartford. I was SUPER EXCITED to sample some of their delicious kosher roast beef again, but when we got there, the deli wasn't slicing meat because of Passover? Even though they were open?
And while this was Passover, there were a LOT of not kosher-for-Passover items mixed in with the Passover items and I was very confused.
Prices were pretty good, though.
Bonus points for cool retro sign.
The only kosher supermarket within 35 miles. Bought all the fixings for a holiday dinner.
Brisket excellent. Kugel so sweet that it was almost inedible. Homemade gefilte fish excellent. Chopped chicken liver adequate. Tsimmes ok but another sugar numb. Challah good. Rugalach very decent.
Full selection of kosher everything. And it’s clean. Very expensive but what isn’t these days? Owner and staff are helpful.
